Carl becomes a rising radio star!

Carl, one of the people we support at in South Oxfordshire, has made such an impression on a local radio station that he has begun volunteering there and is doing regular radio slots. Carl has now done six on-air appearances and is starting to make his stamp on the radio station. We interviewed Carl who told us more about his aspirations, dreams and influences.

Carl becomes a rising radio star!

Carl has had the desire to be on air since he first found out about radio presenting at the National Star College in Gloucester. Since then, he has visited various radio studios to learn about the industry and further his contacts, even meeting national treasure Terry Wogan backstage after watching a live broadcast in London. Carl has also met local stars of radio Mike Reed and Sarah Walker from BBC Radio Berkshire and, through these valuable experiences of the industry, he also got the opportunity to exercise his talent to talk, admitting that he once you get him talking "you just try and stop me!" Despite these claims to fame, he had never imagined this dream might become a reality in the not too distant future.

It all began to come together when Hft staff member, Paul Winter, contacted the show at Enham and found out the details of joining, pricing, what equipment was used and whether it would be accessible for Carl. Carl was called in for an interview and although he described himself as being "extremely nervous", his clear passion for radio broadcasting and his bubbly character shone through and he was called back for a trial later in the week.

The trial gave him the chance to meet and greet the team at Radio Enham, to get a feel for show and discover whether he would like to be a part of their growing crew of presenters. Before going on air he confessed that his "heart was beating like there was no tomorrow!" but what happened next, he was not expecting.

After the trial show, Carl was called to the side by Rachel, the head of Radio Enham, who asked whether she could "have a word" with Carl. Carl says his mind immediately jumped to thinking "oh-no, what have I done?!" but his fears instantly disappeared when she asked him whether he would be willing to join Radio Enham as a regular presenter? He instantly accepted her offer, replying "I’ll take it!" with no hesitation.

Getting this dream off the ground has been achieved through the hard work of the whole house and of course Carl, who says the support from his friends at Hft and their advice to "just enjoy it and be yourself" was really useful; Carl was thankful of the support of many people at different stages of the process.

So for those of you that are interested in finding out what you can expect from Carl’s show we suggest you take a listen on Radio Enham this Thursday between the hours of 11am and 1pm.

In the meantime, to get a flavour of Carl’s groove, here is a little track list of his favourite tunes you can listen to:

  1. Kyle Minogue – Can’t get you out of my head
  2. Cindy Lauper – Girls just wanna have fun
  3. Oasis – Don’t look back in anger
  4. Katy Perry - Roar

So please don’t forget to tune to our rising star at !
