Living independently - Our story
Being able to choose who you live with and where you live is fundamental to feeling in control of your life.
I want to choose where I live and who I live with
Adrian, Phil and Sue were living in registered care in Wadebridge when they chose to live together in their own bungalow, rather than in a larger group, so they could be more independent. As well as learning disabilities, one friend has dementia, one has cerebral palsy and epilepsy and one has physical mobility problems.
Hft helped the three friends to find a suitable house and equipped it with the Personalised Technology that enables them all to live independently and stay safe, with extra space for Hft staff to stay over when needed.
Easy-to-use phones make it easier to stay in touch with family and friends; personal pendants mean they can call for help in case of a fall; simple alarms let them know when they have forgotten to lock the front door; a bogus caller alarm by the front door is linked to a call centre, giving them reassurance.
Hft also helped them secure the support package they needed to make their person-centred support plan work. One person now chooses to use his one-to-one support worker time to keep fit, hitting the Camel trail on a tandem bicycle; another has chosen to work on a community garden project.
Adrian, Phil and Sue feel that the move into their own house together has been a tremendous success, totally changing their lives.
